➤ Study: Older people have an increased risk of renewed corona infection
6:18 a.m.: An infection with the coronavirus offers most people protection from re-infection in the following months. This is the result of a large-scale study in Denmark, which has now been presented in the journal “The Lancet”. However, repeated infections are more common in older people over 65 than in younger people.
According to the scientists, the PCR tests were twice positive in 0.65 percent of the patients during the first and second corona waves. For comparison: the test of those who tested negative during the first wave from March to May 2020 was positive in 3.27 percent of the patients during the second in the following September to December. The researchers gave protection against repeated infection for younger people at 80 percent – for people over 65, however, with only 47 percent.
These findings, according to the researchers, show that measures to protect the elderly, such as keeping your distance, are also fundamental for those who have already had COVID-19. Your analysis continues to suggest that people who have already contracted the coronavirus should also be vaccinated. The elderly, in particular, cannot rely on natural protection.
The other corona news of the day:
Brazil reports a record of more than 90,000 new infections
7:02 a.m.: On Wednesday, Brazil reported 90,303 new infections with the corona virus – more than ever before. According to the authorities, the number of deaths rose by 2,648, the second highest value after a record of 2,841 deaths on Tuesday. In the South American country, a total of 284,775 deaths have been recorded since the pandemic began. This makes Brazil the second hardest hit country in the world after the USA.
Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro has come under massive criticism for his corona policy. On Monday, he announced the fourth change at the top of the Ministry of Health since taking office. The new Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga told journalists on Wednesday that he had enough “autonomy” to make “adjustments” in the government’s corona strategy. He announced that he would reduce the number of deaths in Brazil by restricting social contacts and increasing hospital capacities.
Ema advises on Astrazeneca vaccine in special session
6:22 a.m.: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will hold a special session on Thursday to discuss the safety of Astrazeneca’s corona vaccine. It is expected that the EMA will then make a final recommendation.
After reports of the occurrence of severe blood clots in some vaccinated patients, Germany and several other European countries had stopped vaccinations with the vaccine from the British-Swedish manufacturer for the time being. Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) had described this as a pure precautionary measure.
In the EU, the Astrazeneca vaccine has been approved for people aged 18 and over since the end of January. It was the third vaccine to receive EU-wide approval.
Intensive care physician warns to implement the corona emergency brake
6:13 a.m.: The scientific director of the intensive care register of the specialist society Divi, Christian Karagiannidis, has warned that the corona emergency brake should be adhered to. “I hope that politicians will implement the resolutions according to which the easing will be withdrawn at an incidence value of over 100,” said the doctor to the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”.
The expert calculated that the situation for intensive care patients was similar to October 2020. “At that time there were 3,000 COVID intensive care patients nationwide. If we now stop vaccinating, stick to the easing and let the incidence run to 200, then it could be 5,000 to 6,000 patients,” said Karagiannidis. That is “the absolute capacity limit” in the clinics.
East Prime Ministers advertise Russian vaccine Sputnik V
06:08 am: After the temporary stop of the corona vaccinations with the Astrazeneca vaccine, several East German Prime Ministers are promoting the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. “Russia is a large science country, and I have no doubt that the science there is capable of producing a powerful vaccine, “said Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) the newspapers of the Funke media group. “The vaccine should be approved.” After all, Germany has capacity problems with vaccines.
Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) pointed out, like Kretschmer, that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had to decide on approval first. “In principle, however, the following applies: In the fight against Corona, we welcome any vaccine that is safe and effective and thus helps us to overcome the pandemic,” he told the Funke newspapers.
Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bode Ramelow (left) told the Funke-Blätter: “For a long time I have been wishing for a lot more pressure from the federal government that we get more alternative vaccines approved.” The dependence on Astrazeneca makes the vaccination strategy vulnerable. He himself wants to use his channels to Russia to help. “I don’t want any political approval. But I don’t want any political rejection either,” said Ramelow.
6:01 a.m.: Interior Minister Seehofer for simpler corona rules
Interior Minister Horst Seehofer calls for a significant simplification of the Corona measures. “The regulations have become quite complicated and not always logical,” said the CSU politician to the “Münchner Merkur”. “People don’t understand when the flower shop has to close but the supermarket next door is allowed to sell flowers.”
Seehofer wants a new approach, because: “We can’t stay in lockdown for three years now.” His suggestion: From an incidence of 50, only one customer per ten square meters of sales area is allowed in a store – whether it is a supermarket or other retail trade.
“Then we would not need a rule for an incidence of over 100
more, “said Seehofer. This critical value is expected to be exceeded by more and more rural districts. This would put the previously applicable” emergency brake “into force, which envisages the closure of many shops.
