Corona New Year’s Eve worldwide: New Year in Australia – Fireworks in the ghost town of Sydney – Society

This turn of the year will be different than last. In almost all countries around the world the new year has to be due to the pandemic without the usual mass events and celebrations will. New Zealand on the other hand recently had no corona cases and celebrates without restrictions (Follow New Year’s Eve on our live blog below).

Sydney has welcomed the New Year with large fireworks on the famous Harbor Bridge and the Opera House. It was midnight there at 2 p.m. German time. This time, spectators were not allowed at the port due to the corona pandemic.

The authorities had previously announced that they would punish anyone who tried to break the barriers to the port area with a fine of 1000 Australian dollars (about 626 euros). That apparently worked: Sydney was like a ghost town the closer the New Year approached, observers said.
