The proposal of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to apply the CanSino Biologics vaccine to older adults in the most remote communities of the country is unfeasible, considered the doctor in molecular biology from the University of Oxford
In his conference yesterday, the President said that he was looking to have this vaccine to be applied to the elderly.
Dr. Lemus-Martin pointed out, in an interview with Pascal Beltrán del Río, to Radio Image, that the Chinese vaccine still does not have the authorization of Cofepris to be distributed, in addition to that in phases 1 and 2 it was shown that it is not totally effective in immunizing people over 55 years of age.
He said others such as Pfizer or AstraZeneca could be used, while CanSino passes phase 3.
He recalled that the first results of the test were published in May, after its first phase was applied to 108 volunteers aged between 18 and 60 years.
On that occasion, the researchers found that people with antibodies to Ad5 would have less chance of developing a strong immune response to the vaccine, so only a group of participants developed neutralizing antibodies that are necessary for immunity and people between 45 and 60 years produced weaker immune responses, which means that this vaccine will be useful for people under 45 years of age.
Phase 2 results were published in August in more than 600 volunteers, in which a stronger but weakened or lower immune response was observed in people over 55 years of age.
Phase 3 is still active in Mexico, Chile, Pakistan and Russia among 40 thousand volunteers.
Among “the pros” it can be noted that the vaccine is stored at temperatures in a normal refrigerator and is a single dose, while “the cons” is that it will not provide a strong immune response in people over 55 years of age, but it will Most useful for people between 18 and 55 years of age.
AT THE END OF THE MONTH, IN REMOTE LOCATIONS
In the second stage of the National Vaccination Plan against covid-19, the federal government will seek that the immunization of the pharmaceutical company CanSino is applied in the most remote communities of the country to the elderly and under the surveillance of the Armed Forces and the National Guard to avoid “influentialism or abuse” and that no one gets in line.
According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, vaccination in the elderly will begin in the last week of this month because on January 25 the application of the Pfizer antigen to all medical personnel will conclude.
In his morning conference, he stressed that the Pfizer vaccine is very good, but because of its freezing and transport characteristics it is easier to apply in urban communities, in addition to requiring two doses.
“We are looking to have, to have the CanSino vaccine, from a Chinese pharmaceutical company, because it is a single dose and does not require much refrigeration; With this vaccine we could begin vaccination in the most remote communities of the country with the elderly; we are already integrating the brigades, about 120 thousand people, public servants and also volunteers will participate ”, he indicated.
The President explained that the application of the vaccine will begin in 10,000 integrating centers of marginalized and remote communities, which in turn maintain exchanges with 280,000 small and scattered localities. The idea is that in one week, each of those 10,000 brigades vaccinates 300 elderly people so that in the same period three million Mexicans are immunized.
He explained that of the 12 members of each brigade, four will come from the Armed Forces, two volunteers, four social promoters and two from the health sector, doctors or nurses.
OTHER 53 THOUSAND 625 VACCINES ARRIVE
This Tuesday, the fifth and sixth shipments of vaccines against covid-19, developed by the company Pfizer, arrived in the cities of Mexico and Monterrey, Nuevo León.
On a flight from Frankfurt, Germany, with a stopover in Cincinnati, United States, at 8:21 a.m., the plane of the Canadian company Cargojet landed, with the cargo for the capital.
It is about 53 thousand 625 doses, of which 44 thousand 850 are for the CDMX and 8 thousand 775 will arrive in the capital of New León, for their transfer to the state of Coahuila.
At remote platform number 42 of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), the Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer, was in charge of receiving the shipment of the biological, along with the Secretaries of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, and the Navy -Mexican Navy, Admiral José Rafael Ojeda Durán.
