Judy Cruz, director of the emergency department at El Centro Regional Medical Center, said immediately after the crash, according to the AP news agency, 14 people died at the scene of the accident and another died in the hospital from injuries.
The police later corrected the information: 13 people had died. The hospital subsequently confirmed the number.
Authorities believe there were 25 people in an SUV when the SUV drove into a gravel-laden articulated lorry. The cause of the accident has not yet been clarified.
The accident occurred in Imperial County, near the city of El Centro, about 10 miles from the Mexican border.
