Brexit: Spain and Great Britain agree on a solution for Gibraltar

On a sideline of the Brexit, calm returns: Spain and Great Britain reached an agreement in principle at the last moment that Gibraltar would join the Schengen area. This will prevent the border between EU member Spain and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula from becoming an impermeable external EU border from January 1, 2021, said Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya.

Great Britain had already left the EU at the end of January, but there was a transition phase until the end of 2020. At that time, the country still belonged to the European customs union and the internal market.
