PayPal co-founder and billionaire investor Peter Thiel has warned that the popular cryptocurrency may be a “Chinese financial weapon” against the US and that China’s relationship with Bitcoin should be investigated further.

“Although I am a pro-cryptocurrency, pro-bitcoin maximalist person, I wonder if by now bitcoin should also be thought of in part as a Chinese financial weapon against the United States,” he noted.

The billionaire made these statements in a panel organized by the Richard Nixon Foundation, where he explained that the bitcoin poses a geopolitical threat for the US and that it is necessary to review in depth how China would be investing in the digital asset and how this really works.

On China’s plans to create the digital yuan, he suggested that they would not create “a real cryptocurrency, but just a kind of totalitarian measuring device.”

Peter Thiel has repeatedly demonstrated his open support for cryptocurrencies, but now his views call into question the role of bitcoin in the midst of Sino-US relations.
