Berrettini beats Karatsev, Djokovic’s executioner in the Belgrade final

Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini, number 10 in the ATP ranking, took the Belgrade tournament by beating Russian Aslan Karatsev (N.28), Novak Djokovic’s executioner (N.1) in the semifinals, in three sets: 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (0).

Berrettini, who enforced the ranking, took advantage of the fatigue of a Russian who had tipped the local idol and world number 1 on Saturday, in a marathon match lasting almost three and a half hours, and closed the first set in less than thirty minutes.

But Karatsev showed enormous willpower, taking the second set and forcing the tie-break in the third and final, where fatigue finally knocked him down and prevented him from scoring a single point.

“This title is for my family, this is the first time they are here to see me win a title although it is my fourth. So this one is special,” Berrettini said when they presented him with the champion trophy.

The ATP tournament in Belgrade, which is played on clay, is endowed with more than $ 854,000 in prizes.
