At the end of his term of office
Trump had himself vaccinated discreetly
Donald Trump didn’t seem to be in a hurry to get the vaccination, and consequently neither were many of his supporters. Then the news comes as a surprise that the former president probably had a vaccination syringe inserted in the last few days of his term of office.
Former US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania are said to have been vaccinated against the coronavirus before they left the White House. The “New York Times” reported, citing an unnamed Trump adviser. It is not known which vaccine was used.
The information is interesting insofar as Trump always boasted of his services to vaccine development, but did not actively recommend vaccination during his tenure. When he spoke to conservative activists on Sunday in his first public appearance since leaving the White House, he appealed for the first time to all US citizens to be vaccinated. In parts of the population, and especially among supporters of Trump, skepticism against vaccination is widespread. Experts warn that this threatens to make the fight against the pandemic more difficult.
Trump’s successor Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been publicly vaccinated in December, a month before he took office, to encourage trust in the new vaccine. Trump’s then Vice President Mike Pence also had a vaccination administered in front of the cameras. Trump himself, on the other hand, seemed in no hurry. The 74-year-old fell ill with Covid-19 last October and said repeatedly after his recovery that he considered himself “immune”.
In mid-December, the then White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said Trump was open to vaccination and wanted to encourage Americans to do so. There are no plans to vaccinate Trump.
In the USA, more than 514,000 people have died as a result of a corona infection, which is by far the highest number in the world. More than 50 million people in the country have now received at least one dose of vaccine. That corresponds to 15 percent of the population.
