Alarm at New York Airport …
A passenger on a Republic Airways flight out of Indianapolis was detained on the tarmac at LaGuardia Airport shortly after landing on Saturday afternoon.
A video posted on Twitter shows the man lying face down on the asphalt of the runway with two security guards kneeling next to him.
The authorities said that another passenger had reported the man as “suspicious” during the flight, whereupon the pilot ordered an emergency landing and brought the aircraft to a halt on the runway at around 3:00 pm.
“This came in response to reports from passengers of suspicious and unpredictable behavior by a fellow passenger,” said Thomas Topousis, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.
“All passengers were safely removed,” said the spokesman. “Several people who were closest to the passenger were interviewed.”
In another video, the evacuated passengers are asked to step back and give way to the rescue workers and the man.
A spokesman for the US Department of Homeland Security said in an email that “there was nothing dangerous on the plane”.
Republic Airways announced that Flight 4817 was flying the American Airlines flag and that the incident occurred on board towards the end of the roughly two-hour flight from Indianapolis to LaGuardia.
“After exiting the runway, the aircraft stopped on a tarmac and performed a precautionary emergency evacuation,” Republic Airways said in a statement. “Law enforcement agencies and first responders arrived and the passenger involved in the incident was taken into custody.”
None of the 76 passengers and six crew members on board the aircraft were injured.
