Tragedy off the coast of Tunisia: dozens of people lost their lives in a boat accident. They were on their way to Europe.
In a boat accident off the coast of Tunisia, at least 39 people were killed in the Mediterranean Sea, including four children. This was announced by a spokesman for the coast guard in Sfax, Tunisia on Tuesday. A total of 165 women and men were saved. More survivors are still being sought.
On the run to Italy
The two crashed boats were therefore with migrants on their way across the Mediterranean to Italy. Most of the inmates came from sub-Saharan Africa.
Every year thousands of migrants dare to make the life-threatening passage from Tunisia and Libya to Europe. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 1,200 people died in 2019. According to information from the Tunisian Economic and Social Rights Forum, at least 12,000 migrants came to Italy by boat from Tunisia in the past year.
