It was supposed to be a merry Christmas parade. But it ended in a terrible nightmare.
On Sunday, shortly before 5 p.m. (local time) in Waukesha, Wisconsin, an SUV sped through the middle of the event. At least 30 people were injured, some seriously.
The pictures of the incident are unbearable. A video shared on Twitter shows how the red SUV races into the crowd and drives around a number of people at high speed.
Concrete information on the motives of the perpetrator and the exact number of injured are still unclear. The Waukesha police called on people to avoid downtown.
Another video that the city of Waukesha has published on its Facebook page shows how the spectators at the roadside initially unsuspectingly wave their flags as the SUV sped past them. You can see that at first it is not even clear to people what is happening. He barely misses a young girl.
An eyewitness told FOX News that she saw the SUV crash into a dance group of girls between the ages of 9 and 15. She says the immediate reaction was silence, followed by screaming and running away in panic.
Angelito Tenorio told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he was watching the parade with his family when they saw the SUV speed up.
“Then we heard loud bangs and deafening screams from people being hit by the vehicle,” said Tenorio. “And then we saw people running away or stopping crying, and there were people on the ground who looked like they’d been hit by the vehicle.”
In another video, police appear to have opened fire on the same vehicle after it broke a road block.
