“We are less than 10 countries that we begin to vaccinate before the end of the year ”, President Alberto Fernández assured, amid the expectation and controversy generated by the arrival of the Sputnik V vaccine to the country and the implementation of a vaccination plan as of Tuesday.
“We did the numbers with Ginés and they are less than 10 in the whole world. What we have achieved was very important and what is coming is very difficult because of the great demand for the vaccine since production is delayed, ”the President remarked, emphasizing that Argentina prioritized negotiations with Russia to ensure a good number of doses.
“Today purchases are being concentrated in developed countries. We made a plan and if it goes well we will have peace of mind because it will allow us to have all people at risk vaccinated when March arrives and that would be an achievement “, emphasized Fernández when being interviewed in Radio 10.
With the exception of those who live in Russia, the volunteers who have already applied the vaccine as part of the research process prior to the authorization for its massive use and the inhabitants of the Republic of Belarus, a state on which the ruler of Vladimir Putin exercises direct guardianship, Argentina became the first country outside of that circle that bets on the supposed effectiveness of Sputnik V beyond the lack of scientific data to certify it.
So far, it has not been approved by any independent regulatory agency of the Russian Federation. But the scientists advising the President maintain that the publication of the technical results in The Lancet, one of those prestigious scientific journals. Some of them predicted that the publication would take place in the week that just ended and that did not happen. Others, however, say that the results will be published in the next twenty days.
Faced with this uncertain panorama and while the most developed countries negotiate to buy the Pfizer vaccine, Alberto Fernádez assured that “All the countries in the periphery are looking for vaccines with the same concern and we are taking advantage of the Russian vaccine.”
“If it weren’t for the Russian Federation that paid attention to our needs, we would be like the rest of the countries,” he firmly asserted, highlighting the effort made by the government to close the agreement with Putin.
The President insisted that the Russian government promised to give the amount of vaccines necessary to vaccinate all Argentines: “The central world hoarded vaccines for them and the countries of the periphery are looking for vaccines with the same difficulty with us ”.
He even admitted that there are two other Latin American countries that were interested in acquiring Sputnik V. “I spoke with the Uruguayan Foreign Minister, my friend Panchos Bustillo, and the President of Bolivia and told them that in whatever way I could help, they could count on me”, Said the Head of State, who was willing “To generate the necessary contacts to help them obtain the vaccine.”
At the moment, he said, “they were the only two who raised it with me.” And he added: “Everything we can do to help we are going to do it. To them and to those who need it ”. In that sense, he insisted that “we advance when others do not.”
In this race against the clock to buy vaccines in the midst of a pandemic that is producing outbreaks around the world, the President remarked that “behind the sale of vaccines there is a market of billions of dollars” and highlighted the work of all labs alike.
“All the laboratories that are developing the vaccines are laboratories recognized worldwide, this cannot be questioned,” he insisted. And he complained about the bad press that the vaccine developed in the Asian country has: “The Pfizer vaccine is not called the North American vaccine or the AstraZeneca one is called the English one. To Gamaleya’s the Russian vaccine is referred to in a derogatory way and Gamaleya is a world-renowned institute with several Nobel prizes”.
Meanwhile, to bring more peace to the population, Vladimir Putin announced that the vaccine will finally be applied because its efficacy has already been approved in those over 60 years of age.
Sputnik V showed a 91.4% efficacy in the last control carried out in the third phase of clinical trials, data that “They allow to affirm with certainty that it is highly effective and totally safe for health”, reported the Russian government.
