Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler – Stefan Kurth (51) has dedicated his whole life to wine.
When he was 16, he didn’t really know what to do for a living. So, like his older brother, young Stefan learned the profession of winemaker. Today the entrepreneur has a whole wine empire on two hectares on the Ahr.
Now the culmination of his passion followed. This was proven in the finals of the BILD “Flood Wine of the Year” competition for winemakers who were victims of the flood in the Ahr Valley Kurth winery first place with his red wine “Kathinka SJ”.
The BILD jury praised the beautiful dark color of the wine, its strong, berry taste and the fine balance of tannins. The dry red is available online for 28 euros.
After the bad experiences of the flood, this is good news for Kurth. “The water has taken the ostrich economy from us and we can no longer sell wines to restaurateurs or end consumers,” he says, describing the consequences of the flood.
But hope is sprouting again in the Ahr Valley, also through this triumph.
“I don’t want to be celebrated, but of course I’m happy about the award,” says Kurth happily. “The ‘Aktion Flutwein’ really helped us after the flood. Our online trade has even increased thanks to the attention paid to the Ahr valley. ”
The winemaker can now adorn himself with the title “Flood Wine of the Year” for a year. A decisive year in the Ahr Valley.
The great wish of the winery boss: “It is important that the whole Ahr valley recovers sustainably. The train route has to work again, we need hotels for the tourists and other restaurateurs have to relax so that visitors can experience the Ahr valley in all its diversity again. “
The jury awarded second place to winegrowers Thomas Nelles and his rosé (blanc de noir), took third place Jean Stodden and his Pinot Noir GG. They follow in fourth and fifth place Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoß-Altenahr e.G. and the Peter Lingen winery.
