Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler – It is a picture of the devastation in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate. And the anxious question remains: How many dead are still under the rubble?
One week after the terrible flood of death, 155 people are still missing in the worst affected district of Ahrweiler.
BILD reporters met a special unit from Saxony-Anhalt in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, which is looking for more victims in the rubble mountains with nine specially trained body tracking dogs. The helpers do not want to talk about the details of their work, what the dogs have discovered so far.
But one thing is clear: the dogs trained to search for missing persons can perceive the finest traces of smell – even after weeks or even years. Because they have to concentrate extremely, they sniff for a maximum of 25 minutes at a time and then have to pause.
Specially trained dogs are also used in other regions of the flood disaster. More victims are discovered every day, yesterday the number of deaths rose to 170.
