2 dead in anti-racism protest – US court acquits shooters on all points

This process caused a stir in the USA!

After fatal shots at protesters during anti-racism protests in the US city of Kenosha, the shooter is the one Kyle Rittenhouse (18) acquitted on all charges.

The jury unanimously acquitted the now 18-year-old on Friday from allegations of murder, manslaughter, attempted murder and endangering others.

▶ ︎ Rittenhouse began to sob after the verdict and collapsed briefly, reports the Reuters news agency.

That was what happened

The Rittenhouse, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin, United States in August 2020 and joined armed men there who said they wanted to protect businesses from looters.

Protests, some of which were violent, broke out in the city after a police officer seriously wounded the African-American Jacob Blake (30) with multiple shots in the back on August 23. In clashes on August 25, Rittenhouse shot two men and seriously injured a third. Rittenhouse is white, as are his victims.

His lawyers argued in court that the teenager acted in self-defense after being attacked by protesters. The public prosecutor said that Rittenhouse had “provoked” the violence himself.

The process was politically charged as it was in connection with the “Black Lives Matter” protests last year.

▶ ︎ The fear: After Rittenhouse’s acquittal, violent protests could occur again. Wisconsin’s Governor Tony Evers, 70, has mobilized hundreds of members of the state’s National Guard.

Because: After his arrest, Rittenhouse became a kind of figurehead of the right-wing camp. The $ 2 million bond was quickly raised through donations. His supporters also included the actor and former child star Ricky Schroder (51, “The Little Lord”). Even then, he was convinced of the teenagers’ innocence.

Ex-US President Donald Trump (75) also stood behind Rittenhouse: He was “in great trouble” because demonstrators had “violently attacked” him, Trump said at the time. “He would probably have been killed.”

In the US it had after the last year Death of the African American George Floyd († 46) given nationwide anti-racism protests in a brutal police operation and further cases of police violence against black people.
