17 existing cases in the Malvinas Islands are included according to press information (due to the illegal occupation of the United Kingdom, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, it is not possible to have our own information on the impact of Covid-19 in that part of Argentine territory) .

In this context, the Government will publish in the next few hours a decree that establishes a series of measures to limit the movement, among them that of people who do not perform essential tasks during the early morning hours, in view of the concern of national authorities and governors for the increase in coronavirus infections and the risk of collapse in health systems.

“The decree is being drafted,” said a senior government source to accredited journalists at Casa Rosada, noting that the national government “will set the general guidelines that will be later adopted by each province.”

The chief of staff, Santiago Cafiero, announced that the new provisions “will be in force as of tomorrow,” with their publication in the Official Gazette.

In turn, the Government confirmed that a second batch of Sputnik V doses will arrive in Argentina in the middle of the month, while the vaccination operation continues, with at least 70 thousand people already inoculated, and steps forward to complete the purchase of a million Sinopahrm vaccines, of Chinese origin, which would begin to be received in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Ginés González García, gave an account of the negotiations for the vaccine that China developed: “Today we are negotiating with China one million doses for January and with Brazil, which is producing another of the Chinese development vaccines “, he specified.

In addition, he confirmed that a new Aerolineas Argentinas plane will depart for Russia “in the middle of this month” to “seek the complementary doses of the first application” of the Sputnik V vaccine.

“We buy a total of 20 million of this vaccine, so the transfer of vaccines to Argentina will begin to be almost incessant,” added the national official.

The provinces of Córdoba, Corrientes, Jujuy, Tucumán, Misiones, Río Negro, Entre Ríos, Mendoza, San Luis, Santa Fe, Catamarca, Santiago del Estero and Santa Cruz received the second round of Sputnik V vaccines to continue the immunization operations aimed at health workers, the sector that constitutes the first line of fire in the fight against the pandemic.

GLOBAL PICTURE

Globally, the poorest countries could start receiving the first doses of coronavirus vaccines in weeks, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported without specifying.

The private and public alliance Covax, which organizes the distribution of vaccines worldwide to try to guarantee a more equitable global distribution, signed agreements to obtain up to 2 billion doses.

The first ones will begin to be distributed at the end of January, explained the head of the section of vaccines of the WHO, Kate O’Brien.

Covax’s goal is to achieve vaccines for 20% of the population in each participating country by the end of this year and for 92% of the poorest countries to see their purchase costs covered.

Worldwide, 87.5 million infections of Covid-19 and about 1.89 million deaths were reported, after adding 780,613 and 14,597 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) database .

The United States continued to be the country with the most infections and deaths from Covid-19, after reporting, respectively, 253,145 and 3,865, in the last 24 hours, according to JHU, while Mexico, the fourth most mourning country, registered a new record of deaths, with 1,165.

In the region, Brazil exceeded 200,000 deaths, reported the Ministry of Health, adding that in the last 24 hours there were 1,524 deaths, bringing the total to 200,498.

The Ministry also reported that the number of cases increased by 87,843 in one day, so that there are already almost eight million (7,961,673) infected since the first cases began to be detected in March of last year.

Peru, one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus in Latin America, restarted a national test plan in popular neighborhoods of Lima and other provinces in an attempt to alleviate the impact of a second wave of infections.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also urged Europe to redouble its efforts to contain a strong advance of the coronavirus attributed to a new, more contagious mutation, at a time when the pandemic is raging in several countries on other continents, from Japan to Mexico.

Europe must “do more” in the face of an “alarming situation” created by the circulation in the region of the most contagious British variant of Covid-19, said the director for Europe of the WHO, Hans Kluge, in a press conference call.

Kluge deemed it necessary to add detection and location systems after detecting the British variant in 22 countries in the region, which totals more than 27.6 million cases and 603,000 deaths.
